Synopsis

In an alternate 14th century where the Byzantine Empire never fell to the Arab conquests and the Sassanid Persians remain its great rival, Basil Argyros is a soldier and intelligence officer tasked with navigating the empire's perilous frontiers. This collection of stories follows him through espionage, diplomacy, and military conflict as he confronts both Byzantine and Persian interests across a world reshaped by a single point of divergence. Told with the grounded detail of Turtledove's alternate-history universe, the stories blend intrigue, warfare, and the constant tension of a world where the old empires never fell.
