After We Fell ended with Hardin reeling from a hard truth about his real father, and After Ever Happy opens in the wreckage. His drinking and temper spiral as he tries to process it, and Tessa — worn down from propping him up while her own life comes apart — finally tells him she needs distance.
What follows is a harder, slower chapter for both of them: Tessa rebuilding herself away from the relationship, Hardin in therapy and confronting his family history, each learning separately what the other couldn't teach them.
