Synopsis

In early-1900s Liverpool, Mary McGann endures a difficult marriage to her drunken, jealous husband Frank, staying only for the sake of their children. When Frank throws the family out, Mary flees to relatives in Dublin, where she meets the gentle, steady Richard O'Neill.

Despite the pull between them, Mary isn't looking for love, and when word comes that Frank needs her, she returns to Liverpool, bracing for more hardship. As tragedy and danger close in, Mary has to decide whether she has the strength to reach for the brighter life just within her grasp.
