Flea
Flea, a musician and writer, shares his story in "Acid For The Children." He also explores rhythm and music in "Chad Smith -- Red Hot Rhythm Method.
Acid For The Children
In Acid for the Children, Flea (Michael Balzary) traces his path from a chaotic, itinerant childhood — moving from Australia to New York to Los Angeles, living through his parents' divorce and his stepfather's alcoholism and jazz-musician instability — to finding identity and purpose through music. He describes his early friendship with Hillel Slovak and Anthony Kiedis, his immersion in the LA punk scene, and the drug use and self-destruction that ran alongside his creative awakening.
The memoir ends before the formation of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, focusing instead on the formative years that shaped Flea as a person and musician — a story about art, family dysfunction, and the search for belonging rather than a conventional band history.
The narrative focuses almost exclusively on the author's life before the band existed, with the formation of the group only appearing at the very end of the book.
The author intentionally avoided writing a standard career retrospective, instead crafting a literary origin story that explores his childhood, influences, and personal development.
