In approaching this book, I made the mistake of setting my expectations too high, hoping for a narrative as gripping as "Wild" by Cheryl Strayed. Admittedly, that's a lofty bar to reach, as "Wild" holds a special place among my favorite memoirs. While Bryson's book was enjoyable, it didn't quite meet the emotional depth I had anticipated.
What I found instead was a wealth of historical insight into the Appalachian Trail, which, while interesting, wasn't exactly what I was looking for. If you're fascinated by the history of the trail and enjoy learning about its origins and development, then this book is a must-read. However, if you're seeking a deeply personal journey akin to "Wild," you may want to explore other options.
