Synopsis

In this gentle second Monk and Robot novella, the tea monk Sibling Dex and the wild-built robot Mosscap set out together from the wilderness and back into the human world of Panga, carrying with them the question that started their friendship: what do people actually need?

As they travel from tiny hamlets to Dex's family farm to the bustling City, Mosscap — the first robot to seek out humanity in centuries — meets people who are baffled, delighted, and unsettled by its earnest curiosity. Dex, meanwhile, is still quietly wrestling with the restlessness that sent them into the wild in the first place, unsure whether a life of purpose is something you find or something you're allowed to simply have.

Becky Chambers's Hugo-winning solarpunk series continues as a warm, low-stakes, deeply humane meditation on purpose, community, and contentment — a hopeful vision of a healed world where the biggest questions are the ones about how to live well.
