Synopsis

In 1930s colonial Malaysia, eleven-year-old Ren, a Chinese houseboy, is given a dying charge by his master: find the man's severed finger and reunite it with his body within forty-nine days, or his soul will wander forever. Across town, Ji Lin—an apprentice dressmaker moonlighting as a dancehall girl to pay off her mother's debts—comes into possession of a gruesome souvenir: a mummified finger. As a string of unexplained deaths and whispers of men who turn into tigers ripple through the district, the fates of the boy and the young woman are drawn inexorably together. A lush, superstition-steeped historical mystery.
