Synopsis

A concise, accessible narrative of world history from prehistory to the early 20th century, written for a general audience rather than specialists — the defining characteristic of the "popular-history" genre. The tone is reflective and elegiac rather than polemical or academic, and the book's central theme is the continuity and fragility of human civilization over millennia, which fits "reflective" and "thought-provoking" rather than any genre-specific mood tag. No fiction tropes apply since this is a work of nonfiction history.
