Synopsis

In 1918, as the Spanish influenza epidemic sweeps through Portland, Oregon, seventeen-year-old Cleo leaves her comfortable boarding school. She joins the Red Cross, stepping into a world forever changed by the devastating illness. Cleo must navigate the challenges of the pandemic while finding her place in a society grappling with widespread loss.

Makiia Lucier grew up on the Pacific island of Guam and holds degrees in journalism and library science; she has since lived across Saipan, Oregon, Colorado, Italy, New Hampshire, Idaho, and North Carolina. A former librarian, she writes young adult fiction drawing on history and mythology, including the Isle of Blood and Stone duology, the historical novel A Death-Struck Year, and Year of the Reaper, a historical fantasy and mystery set in a fictionalized post-plague Spain.
