Synopsis

Josh Mahon has hand-reared a bull-calf called Boy, who follows him everywhere like a dog — including, on the first morning of the new school year in the Jamaican village of Kendal, right into the classroom. After the chaos that follows, Josh's mother sells the calf to the local shopkeeper. Josh does not accept it: he organises the other schoolchildren into a demonstration and then a hunger strike, and slowly the village comes round to his side. C. Everard Palmer's best-known children's novel, first published in 1972.

Cyril Everard Palmer (1930–2013) was a Jamaican writer best known for children's novels set in rural Jamaica. Born in Kendal, Hanover Parish, he trained as a teacher at Mico Teachers' College in Kingston and worked as a journalist for The Gleaner before his first novel, A Broken Vessel, was published in 1960. He went on to write more than a dozen children's books, including The Wooing of Beppo Tate, A Cow Called Boy and My Father, Sun-Sun Johnson, praised for their craftsmanship and humour. He e...
