The Twilight Saga
The Twilight Saga: the story so far
What happens in each book, in order. Every recap spoils the book it covers, so they stay hidden until you open one.1. Twilight
Bella Swan moved from Phoenix to her father's house in Forks so her mother could travel with a new husband. On her first day the boy beside her in biology looked at her as though she smelled of something rotten, then vanished for a week.
When Edward Cullen came back he was friendly, and shortly afterwards he crossed a car park faster than anyone could follow and stopped a skidding van with one hand. Jacob Black, a Quileute boy from the reservation, told her the old story about the cold ones as a joke, and Bella worked out the rest herself. Edward admitted it. His family were vampires who fed on animals, he could read every mind except hers, and her blood was the one thing in a century he had wanted badly enough to be dangerous.
They fell in love anyway. Then three nomads came through Forks, and one of them, a tracker called James, decided that a vampire family protecting a human girl was the best game he had been offered in decades.
The Cullens split up and hid Bella in Phoenix with Alice and Jasper. James drew her out by making her believe he had her mother, then broke her leg and bit her hand in a dance studio while filming it. Edward arrived, the Cullens killed James, and Edward sucked the venom back out of the bite rather than let her change.
She woke in hospital with a story about falling through a window. Edward took her to a prom she had wanted to skip. She asked him to make her what he was, and he refused. James's mate Victoria was never found.
2. New Moon
Bella cut her finger opening a birthday present at the Cullens' house, and Jasper, the newest of them to their diet, came across the room at her. Edward decided the only way to keep her alive was to be gone. He told her in the woods that he no longer wanted her, and the whole family left Forks that night.
Bella lost months to it. She came back to herself only after discovering that doing something dangerous made her hear Edward's voice telling her to stop, so she started collecting risks: a wrecked motorbike, then a cliff.
Jacob Black rebuilt the motorbikes, and then rebuilt her, and then stopped answering the phone. He had turned into a wolf. The Quileute pack existed because the Cullens did, and it was now hunting Laurent and Victoria, who had come back for Bella because Edward had killed James.
Bella jumped off the cliff for the sound of his voice and Jacob pulled her out of the water. Alice saw the jump and not the rescue. Rosalie told Edward. Edward went to Volterra and asked the Volturi to kill him, and when they refused he decided to force it by stepping into the sunlight in front of a crowded square.
Alice got Bella there with a minute to spare. The Volturi let all three walk out on one condition: Bella was a human who knew too much, so she would be turned or she would be killed, and they would come back to check.
The Cullens voted to change her. Edward and Rosalie voted against. Jacob pointed out that biting a human breaks the treaty and means war. Edward came home, and Charlie grounded her.
3. Eclipse
People were disappearing in Seattle and the papers were calling it a serial killer. Edward knew the pattern of a newborn vampire that nobody was controlling, and the Cullens eventually understood there was not one of them but an army, being raised deliberately and pointed at Forks.
Victoria had built it. She had spent two books wanting Bella dead because Edward had killed James, and she had finally found a way to come at her with numbers.
The Denali coven refused to help, so the Cullens made a truce with the Quileute pack instead, and vampires and wolves trained together in a clearing while both sides pretended not to enjoy it.
Edward proposed. Bella accepted on her own terms, and made him agree to one more condition first. Jacob told her plainly that he loved her and would not stop fighting for her, and kissed her until she hit him, and then made her admit that she loved him too. She did. It was not enough to change her mind.
The pack and the Cullens broke the newborn army in the clearing. Victoria tracked Edward's scent to the ridge where Bella was hidden, and Edward killed her there.
Bella chose Edward and told Jacob so herself, which was the hardest thing she had done. Then she went home and told Charlie she was getting married. Jacob read the wedding invitation, turned into a wolf and ran, and did not come back.
4. Breaking Dawn
Bella married Edward and they went to an island off the coast of Brazil. Two weeks in she was pregnant, which was not supposed to be possible, and whatever was growing was doing it in weeks instead of months and breaking her from the inside.
She refused to end it, and the family split over her. Rosalie stood guard for the pregnancy. Jacob's pack decided the child had to be destroyed, and Jacob broke away rather than allow it, taking Seth and Leah with him.
The birth did kill her. Edward cut the baby out, bit Bella everywhere he could reach and put venom straight into her heart. She woke two days later as a vampire, and turned out to be better at it than anyone had expected.
Jacob had gone to the nursery meaning to kill the child, and imprinted on her instead, which ended the war with the wolves and made everything else permanently strange.
Then Irina saw Renesmee from a distance and reported an immortal child to the Volturi, a thing their law says must be destroyed along with everyone who made it. The Cullens spent months gathering vampires from around the world to stand as witnesses, and Bella found out what she was: a shield, able to stretch her own immunity over everyone she loved.
The Volturi came to a field in the snow. Alice arrived at the last moment with Nahuel, a hundred and fifty year old half-human who had grown up perfectly safe, which took the charge apart. The Volturi left without a fight. Bella lowered her shield and let Edward hear her thoughts for the first time.
