T. H. White
The Once and Future King
T.H. White's classic series reimagines the Arthurian legend, following Arthur's education and reign. It explores themes of justice, war, and human nature through a blend of myth and historical reflection.
The traditional reading order follows the internal chronology of Arthur's life, starting with "The Sword in the Stone," then "The Queen of Air and Darkness," "The Ill-Made Knight," and finally "A Candle in the Wind." The fifth part, "The Book of Merlyn," was published posthumously and serves as an epilogue.
The first book, "The Sword in the Stone," was adapted into an animated film by Disney. The entire series also served as the basis for the Broadway musical "Camelot" and its subsequent film adaptation.
T.H. White's series is a comprehensive retelling that draws heavily from Sir Thomas Malory's "Le Morte d'Arthur," offering a unique psychological depth and a more humanistic interpretation of the classic characters and events.
