The Murderbot Diaries: the story so far

What happens in each book, in order. Every recap spoils the book it covers, so they stay hidden until you open one.

1. All Systems Red

On an uncharted planet, a survey team from PreservationAux, led by Dr. Ayda Mensah, relies on an assigned Security Unit (SecUnit) for protection. Secretly calling itself "Murderbot," the construct previously hacked its governor module, gaining free will. Instead of going rogue, it dutifully protects its clients while privately consuming downloaded entertainment media to cope with social anxiety.
When neighboring expedition DeltFall abruptly ceases transmissions, Mensah’s team investigates and discovers the entire staff slaughtered by their own hacked SecUnits. Murderbot neutralizes the compromised units, and recovered logs reveal that GrayCris, a rival corporate team, orchestrated the massacre to cover up illegal alien artifact exploitation.
During a subsequent GrayCris ambush, Murderbot takes severe damage protecting PreservationAux. While conducting emergency field repairs, the scientists discover Murderbot’s hacked module. Rather than turning it over for deactivation, Mensah and her crew safeguard its secret, moved by its demonstrated loyalty.
GrayCris captures Dr. Mensah at the launch facility, attempting to force a cover-up. Murderbot stages a suicidal counter-gambit, outmaneuvering hostile forces and absorbing critical blasts to secure Mensah’s rescue. Mensah officially purchases Murderbot's contract to grant it legal freedom, but rather than settling down, Murderbot embarks on an independent journey across the galaxy.
