The King and I
The King and I series explores cultural differences and understanding through music and drama. It presents a classic story of an English governess in 19th-century Siam, highlighting themes of tradition versus modernity and the power of education.
The musical, and thus the series, is inspired by the real-life experiences of Anna Leonowens, a British governess who taught the children of King Mongkut of Siam in the 1860s.
The story has been adapted into several films, most notably the 1956 musical film starring Yul Brynner and Deborah Kerr, and an animated film in 1999.
The music, composed by Richard Rodgers with lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, is integral to the narrative, using songs to advance the plot, develop characters, and explore the cultural themes of the story.
