Special Agent Pendergast

Frequently asked questions

• Do I need to read the Pendergast books in order?

While the series features an overarching character arc and recurring supporting cast, many entries function as self-contained mysteries. Starting with the first book, Relic, provides the necessary context for the protagonist's complex personal history and his evolving relationships with other recurring characters.

• Are there other series that connect to the Pendergast books?

The series shares a universe with several other works by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child, including the Gideon Crew series. Characters from these separate series occasionally cross over, and events in one series can have lasting consequences for the world inhabited by Pendergast.

• Has the Pendergast series been adapted for film or television?

The first book in the series, Relic, was adapted into a feature film released in 1997. However, the film significantly altered the source material, most notably by omitting the character of Aloysius Pendergast entirely.
