Shadow and Bone
The Shadow and Bone trilogy is Leigh Bardugo's first Grishaverse series and the entry point to that world. In the war-torn nation of Ravka, orphaned soldier Alina Starkov discovers a rare power that could unmake the Shadow Fold — a swathe of unnatural darkness cutting the country in two — and is taken from her regiment to train among the Grisha, Ravka's magical elite. Across three books — Shadow and Bone, Siege and Storm and Ruin and Rising — the story moves through court intrigue, a fraught love triangle and a widening war. The trilogy is complete; the Grishaverse continues in the Six of Crows and King of Scars duologies. The prequel Demon in the Wood and the short story The Tailor sit alongside it as companions rather than numbered entries.
The Shadow and Bone trilogy should be read first, followed by the Six of Crows duology, and then the King of Scars duology. While each series can be enjoyed independently, reading them in this order enhances the overall world-building and character connections.
The Shadow and Bone series has been adapted into a Netflix original series, which also incorporates characters and storylines from the Six of Crows duology.
The Shadow and Bone series is part of a larger universe known as the Grishaverse, which includes the Six of Crows duology and the King of Scars duology, featuring interconnected characters and events.
