NIICHAVO
The Strugatsky brothers' two comic novels set in and around NITWiT, the National Institute for the Technology of Witchcraft and Thaumaturgy: Monday Starts on Saturday and its sequel Tale of the Troika. Soviet institutional satire wearing Russian folklore as a lab coat.
The series is generally read in publication order, starting with "Monday Starts on Saturday." While each book features a self-contained adventure, reading them sequentially allows for a deeper appreciation of the evolving character dynamics and the institute's eccentricities.
The series has been adapted into a Soviet-era film titled "Charodei" (Sorcerers), which takes significant creative liberties with the source material. It captures some of the whimsical spirit but diverges considerably from the books' plot and characters.
While the NIICAVO series stands alone, it shares the Strugatskys' characteristic blend of science fiction, social commentary, and philosophical inquiry found in many of their other works. It explores similar themes of bureaucracy and the nature of progress within a fantastical setting.
