Nexus
Ramez Naam's postcyberpunk trilogy is set in a 2040 where Nexus — an experimental nano-drug — can link human minds into a network and run software on the brain itself. Scientist Kaden Lane and the people drawn in around him are caught between governments determined to control or destroy the technology and those who believe it is the next step for humanity. Published by Angry Robot between 2012 and 2015: Nexus tied for the 2014 Prometheus Award and was shortlisted for the Arthur C. Clarke Award, and Apex won the 2015 Philip K. Dick Award.
The recommended reading order is Nexus, Crux, and then Apex. While The Nexus Chronicles is a related collection of short stories, it is best read after the main trilogy to avoid potential spoilers and fully appreciate the world-building.
As of my last update, there has been no confirmed film or television adaptation of the Nexus series.
