Le pays des autres
Leïla Slimani's trilogy follows three generations of the Belhaj family in Morocco, beginning just after the Second World War, when Mathilde, a young Alsatian woman, marries Amine, a Moroccan veteran of the French army, and settles with him on a farm near Meknès. Drawing on the author's own family history, the sequence moves from the last years of the French protectorate through independence and the decades that follow, tracing how each generation inherits, resists and remakes the choices of the one before. Its subjects are identity, belonging, and the pull between two countries that never quite claim you.
The series is intended to be read in publication order, starting with "Le Pays des autres" (also known as "War, So Much War"), followed by "Regardez-nous danser," and then "J'emporterai le feu." While each book can be appreciated individually, reading them sequentially provides the full scope of the family saga.
The Le Pays des autres series is a standalone work and does not directly connect to other novels by Leïla Slimani in terms of characters or plotlines. It is a distinct historical family saga.
Leïla Slimani has publicly stated her intention for the Le Pays des autres series to be a trilogy, with "J'emporterai le feu" being the third and final installment.
