Hyman Kaplan
Follow the humorous misadventures of Hyman Kaplan, an eager but grammatically challenged immigrant student, as he attends an English night school class in New York City. This series offers lighthearted stories about language, cultural adjustment, and the joy of learning.
The stories were originally published as individual pieces in The New Yorker before being collected into two separate volumes, The Education of Hyman Kaplan and The Return of Hyman Kaplan. While the second book features a more advanced Kaplan, the stories function as episodic humor and can be enjoyed independently.
Leo Rosten eventually combined and revised the material from both original collections into a single volume titled O Kaplan! My Kaplan!, which was published in 1976.
The character and his classroom experiences were adapted into a Broadway musical titled The Education of Hyman Kaplan, which premiered in 1968.
