Dragon Ball Z

Frequently asked questions

• Is Dragon Ball Z a separate series from the original Dragon Ball manga?

The division between Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z is primarily a branding choice used for the English-language release to match the anime adaptation. In the original Japanese publication, the entire story is one continuous series of 42 volumes, with the content labeled as Dragon Ball Z simply representing the latter portion of that single narrative.

• Where should I start reading if I want the full story?

To experience the complete narrative as intended by the author, you should begin with the first volume of the original Dragon Ball series. The content marketed as Dragon Ball Z begins at chapter 195, which corresponds to the 17th volume of the original Japanese run.

• Are there other manga series that connect to this story?

The series has a stealth prequel titled Jaco the Galactic Patrolman, which is a one-volume work by the same author that features characters who later appear in the sequel series, Dragon Ball Super. Dragon Ball Super serves as a direct continuation of the original manga and is currently ongoing.
