Michael Radford's adaptation of Orwell's novel, filmed in and around London during the months the book itself is set. John Hurt plays Winston Smith, the Outer Party clerk who rewrites the past for a living and begins keeping a diary; Suzanna Hamilton is Julia, and Richard Burton, in his last screen role, is O'Brien. The film is austere and largely colourless by design, and it follows the novel closely through the affair, the arrest and Room 101.
